Special Feature: Cafe Hopping in Sungai Petani, Kedah

A special feature on the cafes in Sungai Petani, Kedah since we were there for a half day trip recently to do what we do best, cafe hopping! You will be surprised that they have really nice cafes there! No point keeping these hidden gems to ourselves since sharing is always caring! ;)

Since all these cafes are located near or in the Village Mall itself, just take the Sungai Petani Utara exit and then turn left after the toll. Go all the way straight and you will be able to spot the Village Mall on your right :)

1. Bites Cafe
    Opening Hours: 12pm - 12am (Sunday - Thursday)
                        12pm-1am (Friday & Saturday)
Location: 155, Jalan Lagenda Heights 6, 08000 Sungai Petani
Tel : +604 425 7923

This cafe is located beside the Village Mall and behind the Old Town White Coffee, which is not hard to miss. The highlight of the cafe would obviously be the Post It On notes stuck all over the wall of the cafe with all sorts of cute messages. The food and drinks are all reasonably priced and reasonably tasty as well. From their Facebook, it seems that this cafe will be undergoing some renovation in January 2014 so faster head on over if you like current design! ;)

2. French Kisses Patisserie
Opening Hours : 11am to 10pm Daily (Closed on Tuesday)
Location : 2-17, Village Mall, Lagenda Heights, Sungai Petani
Tel : +6019 474 5570

Absolutely fell in love with this cute cozy cafe nestled right inside the Village Mall on the 2nd Floor. It came as surprise to us to see such a pretty cafe in a small town like Sungai Petani! :) The place is really small with only about 5 tables.

We read from The Star online that the owner of the café, Melody graduated with double degrees in Australia and returned home to Sungai Petani with her Australian boyfriend to start the cafe back in 2011. From their blog entry, we found it interesting that they still keep buying all the best ingredients to keep the pastries up to its standards, one of them being the Varlhona chocolate, a French luxury chocolate. They actually have to go all the way to Kuala Lumpur just to specifically purchase them. Bless their hearts and dedication!

French Kisses Patisserie also highlighted to us recently that they are THE ONLY cafe in Asia with the "Has Bean" coffee beans, roasted by the world renown coffee roasters from the UK! If you don't believe us, do check out this link provided by French Kisses Patisserie!

That is why their food and coffee is a little pricey, but without a doubt they are all very tasty and we give them two thumbs up. Their macarons are seriously to die for so make sure you order them when you are there! :)

3. Ice Cream Societe
Location : Village Mall, Lagenda Heights, Sungai Petani

We stumbled upon this cafe about a year ago and completely fell in love with the place. Just look at the pictures above, how can anyone not fall in love with the place? It's also located on the 2nd Floor, right beside the French Kisses Patisserie and yes, they share the same owners! However, during our recent trip there, we were disappointed to see that the place is closed. We later FB message them, only to get this back:

So, let's all start flooding French Kisses Patisserie to make them open up Ice Cream Societe again. After all, 5 tables isn't hard to fill up right? ;) We've given so many reasons above so do give this lovely cafe all the support that you can! The place is just too pretty to be turned into a kitchen and production area! :(

Penang : Cafe Hunting Part 1

We couldn't help but to notice that new cute cafes are popping up at almost every corner of Penang driving locals and tourists alike to go on a cafe hunting craze. Since we are also doing a lot of cafe hopping ourselves, we decided that it would be a good idea to introduce to all our readers the little cafe gems hidden all over Penang ;)

We will be reviewing 3 to 5 cafes per post so get ready to join us on a cafe hunting craze!

1. Kaffa Expresso Bar
Opening Hours : 8am to 10pm Daily
Location : 22, Green Hall, Georgetown, Penang
Tel : +604 262 2822

Absolutely loved everything about this vintage themed two storey cafe from the interior to the service to the food to the coffee! This is their second outlet, with their first one opened in Kuala Lumpur. A little bird also told us that we should look out for its second branch in Penang, opening soon at the Penang International Airport! :)

2. Dolce Dessert
Opening Hours : 3pm to 11pm (Tues to Sun)
Location : 18, Kek Chuan Road, Georgetown, Penang
Tel : +6016-441 9120
FB Link : http://www.facebook.com/DolceDessert18

Born in the Year of The Rat ourselves, we were excited with this cafe. Rats were found  all over...Not in a bad way, of course but in forms of cute drawings on the walls of the cafe! :) The cake and coffee were okay but there's definitely room for improvement! Some coffee art of the rat would also be a bonus!

3. Pit Stop
Opening Hours : 9am to 6pm Daily
Location : 12, Lorong Chulia, Georgetown, Penang

This cafe is opened by the same person who opened Manila Place in Gurney Plaza previously. The cafe is cozy and the most interesting part of the deco would have to be the hanging chair and the usage of chalks to write meaningful quotes on a luggage bag etc.  The food and coffee here is not too bad and quite reasonably priced.

4. Gathers Cafe
Opening Hours : 2:00pm - 11:00pm (Except Wednesdays)
Location : 155, Ground Floor, Jalan Raja Uda,
Pusat Perniagaan Raja Uda,
12300 Butterworth, Penang

If you are being a little bit adventurous, perhaps you can cross over the sea to Butterworth where cafes are also starting to bloom. Found this cute cafe nestled in the heart of Jalan Raja Uda and what we love about this cafe is definitely their creativity. Just look above at our dessert and coffee, it's so in line with the spirit of Christmas! *melts* Both the dessert and coffee are not only good to look at but they're just as delicious too! :)

This cafe is also famous for its "NO" rules and seriously, we're not sure whether we should cry or laugh. Read through this and let us know! Lucky for us, there's no such thing as "No Photos Allowed"! Phew!

5.  沿海地带生活馆 By The Sea Boutique Cafe
Opening Hours : 3:00pm - 10:00pm (Tues- Fri), 2:00pm - 11:00pm (Sat & Sun)
Location : 6924 Jalan Ong Yi How, 13400 Butterworth, Penang
Tel : +604 323 3449
FB Link : http://www.facebook.com/CoastalZone

This cafe, which is also situated in Butterworth is unique as there is real beach sand on the floor! As beach lovers, we thought we would fall in love with this place at first glance but sad to say, it fell below our expectation. The concept was great but the delivery of the concept somehow fell short in our opinion. Extra brownie points are also taken off as the wooden chairs are really uncomfortable to sit on :( Didn't have the chance to try their desserts but their drinks were quite alright.

10 Useful Tips for Australia

Good Day Mate!!!

I've just recently came back from a 10 days trip to the Land Down Under, covering Gold Coast, Brisbane and Melbourne. Australia is an expensive place to travel and it certainly didn't help with their currency three times our RM. Imagine all your expenses have to be times by three! The horror!

However, don't let that scare you off from visiting Australia as you can enjoy Australia and still keep it in within your budget. I've been there and done that so yes, it is very possible although I did have doubts about it before flying!

Since we stayed with an aunty in Melbourne where almost everything is well taken care of, these traveling tips will focus more on Gold Coast where we were on a DIY style. Here are a few useful tips that I've picked up along the way so read on and take note! ;)

1. Public Transportation

GO Card (Gold Coast & Brisbane)

You may purchase the GO Card at any convenience stores with a deposit of AUD 10, which is refundable at the end of your trip.  This allows you to travel seamlessly on all TransLink bus, train and ferry services and entitles you to travel savings and discounts. It's at least 30 per cent cheaper than the cost of a single paper ticket! We top up ours at AUD50 and it was more than enough to last us throughout our trip.

To save even more, try to plan your trip during the off peak period which is between 9am to 3.30pm, after 7pm to 2am and all weekends / public holidays to save an additional 20%! You can check out their super helpful site at TransLink for further information and discounts!

Myki Card (Melbourne)

You may purchase the Myki Visitor Pack for AUD14 which includes AUD8 myki money, which is enough for one day’s travel in Zone 1 (which includes the entire tram network) and discount vouchers at 15 attractions all over Melbourne. You can buy a Myki Visitor Pack from the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square, SkyBus terminals at Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station and from the PTV Hub.

Don't say we didn't tell you but it is highly recommended to travel during the weekends or public holidays as you will only be charged a maximum of AUD3.50 per day irrespective of how many times you hop on and off the trains, buses or trams ;)

2. Download the TransLink App

The TransLink App is really useful during our trip especially the Journey Planner. All we need to do is to put in Point A to Point B and it will provide us with all the necessary information which makes our life so much easier! However, this app only works with data or wifi so if you are not planning to get a data line, do not panic. You can still search beforehand and screenshot the results for your easy reference! :)

Just fill in your destination, day and time and let the app do the rest for you!

They will provide you with several options to choose from, the estimated time of arrival and the bus number

The total amount of fare is also provided for easy budgeting! :)

3. Airport Transfers - Gold Coast

The cheapest way is of course by public transportation. Since we stayed in Surfers Paradise, we just have to take Bus #702 from the airport and it would have cost us only AUD5.84 / AUD4.68 (Off-peak) one way per person. You would be saving a lot because the return trip would only be AUD11.68 / AUD9.36.

However, the bus would stop about 10 mins walk to our hotel but trust us, it would be the most excruciating 10 mins walk if you are also pulling your huge luggage with you all the way. It also didn't help that most of Surfers is under construction now for the Light Rail which should be ready in 2014 :(

Since I'm bringing my parents along, the Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle seemed to be the best choice and the return trip cost us AUD38 each. Booked the tickets online the first trip which proved to be a mistake. Luckily, I decided to buy over the counter when I came back from Melbourne. Don't worry, the tickets are easy to purchase and usually the bus is only half full.

Over the counter, they actually offered us the Family Package which only cost AUD90 return for the 3 of us. That saved us a whooping AUD24! It was specifically stated online that the Family Package is for 2 Adults and 2 Kids so here, they either provided this offer for all family over the counter or........*gasps* I actually look 4-13 years old to them haha You can try your luck if you are traveling with your family and let us know how it goes alright! ;)

4. Freedom Pass & Gold Pass

The  Gold Coast Tourist Shuttle also provide tourists the 3 days, 5 days, 7 days and 10 days Freedom Pass and Gold Pass as follows:-

For us, our public transportation costs us AUD35.09 together with return airport transfers of AUD30. This would only come up to AUD65.09 in total for one person. Hence, there is no point getting the 5 days Freedom Pass as it would cost more at AUD95. Make sure you do your research properly by calculating the total fares using the Translink app to make every cent count! ;)

5.  Prepaid Phone Line & Data

On the recommendation of a friendly 7 Eleven employee, we head over to Optus at Surfers and got an unlimited calls and data prepaid card for AUD30 which will be valid for 30 days. This package is especially for the tourists so make sure you bring your passport along. It's advisable to get the phone card directly from Optus as they will help you change your Sim Card and activate it.

However, please do not misconstrue the word "unlimited" as your calls and data are still limited to the AUD30 limit. Once over, you would have to top up again. They sent me a sms on my second last day to say that my credit is less than AUD5 haha The AUD30 is just enough for my 10 days stay and it could have lasted longer if my dad didn't start calling all his friends in Australia to chat for hours! haha

 6. Research for online deals

Surf online for the best deals and sign up to sites like Groupon Australia, Viator, Experience Oz and MyFun months before your trip.

For this particular trip, my Melbourne aunty then found a deal online from Jetstar whereby for only AUD89.99, we will have access to Movie World, Sea World and Wet & Wild. That's THREE theme parks for the price of AUD89.99! For your info, just one theme park entry cost AUD84.99 so this deal is super worth it.

I somehow spotted a small print which states that the Jetstar deal is in partnership with one Viator. Out of pure curiosity, I decided to check out Viator and viola...it was even cheaper there! The same deal is offered for only AUD89 and hence there was no turning back! ;)

We also managed to get tickets to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for only AUD20 each through Groupon instead of the full priced ticket of AUD49.

7.  Get a Self contained Apartment

If possible, try to book a self contained apartment so that you have a full set of kitchen equipments to cook. We stayed at Trickett Gardens Holiday Apartments for AUD104 per night for 3 people, thanks to Wotif.com and it came with a fully equipped kitchen, a washing machine and a dryer! The room is also super spacious and clean.

A small hint, I'm not sure if it's true but according to the receptionist, it would be cheaper to book directly through them than through the online sites. Perhaps, you can try to email them first once you check out the prices online to see if you can get a better deal :)

Also, do shop for your groceries from Woolworths or Coles and look for their house name brands to save even more. Don't worry, their quality way surpasses the quality of our Tesco brands ;) We also manage to get a whole roasted chicken for only AUD8 and a large pizza for only AUD5 from Woolsworth. If we were to eat outside, it would have at least cost us AUD10 per meal each!

8. Late Check-Ins

Over here, we always have a hotel receptionist at any hour of any day no matter how late you check in.  However in Australia, if you check in after 5pm, do not panic if the reception is close and there's not a soul in there that can help you with your check in.

To save you from the culture shock, all you need to do is pick up the phone and dial for the operator. They would then direct you to a safety box and provide you with the combination to the safe. Your keys and all information will be found in one envelope and you may proceed to check yourself into your room! Just make sure you inform the hotel that you will be checking in late order for them to arrange the necessary.

9.  Good & Affordable Coffee

If you are a coffee addict like me but is on a tight budget, you can always visit the 7 Eleven stores. Yes, you heard me right! 7 Eleven provides a self service coffee and they only cost AUD1 for the regular cup and AUD2 for the large cup. Also, if you are thinking just normal black coffee, you are wrong again. They are sophisticated enough to have Cappuccino and Latte too! Do give it a try and you won't regret it, I promise! ;)

10. See Australia for free!

If entrance fees are too expensive, there are a lot of places of interest which you can visit and not spend a single cent from your pocket. There are the Cathedrals, Churches, Museums, State Library, City Hall, Casinos etc which are all free for viewing and just the architecture alone is enough to blow you away!  Don't worry, will blog about the places soon so stay tune!

Further, do take note that all the City Circle Trams, City Hopper Ferries , City Circle Buses  and Melbourne Visitor Shuttle are free for you to hop on and off as they take you all around the places of interest in Brisbane and Melbourne! :)

Penang Secret Gardens of Earthly Delights Location And Map

We discovered the first garden, Ah Soh's Garden by accident during one of our murals hunting trip and were surprised to find out that there are actually more places like this in Penang! In conjunction with the Georgetown Festival 2013, there are actually ten "Secret Gardens of Earthly Delights" scattered all over Penang, waiting to be discovered! However, as of now, only 8 are fully completed. Since there isn't much information provided online, let us the Lady Travel Bugs be your guide once again and reveal the secrets! :)

1. Ah Soh's Garden by Alex Lee
Location : Along Weld Quay (directly opposite Liva Seafood Restaurant & Shell Petrol Station)

This is, by far the best and our favourite garden and it sets a really high expectation among all. We first discovered the garden at night, after the Victoria Street Project and had the opportunity to meet the Ipoh-based Alex and his parents, who are really nice and friendly. The Mom even helped us to take photos and give us tips on the best angles to take them! ;)

Sadly the pictures didn't turn up so good at night so we went back another day to take a good look around. From an abandoned housing lot at No. 41, Weld Quay, Georgetown, he managed to transform the whole place into a cute garden with settings of the old traditional kitchen. Really impressive!

2. Metal and Air by Wong Keng Fuan
Location : Junction between Kapitan Keling Road & Carnavon Street

Sad to say, there's no proper upkeep of this arch built between two shop houses and by the time we were there, the air plants were all dried up and dead :( If we have not read it online, we wouldn't have known that it is a part of the project as well.

3. Mosaic Koi Fish Pond by Adam Michalski
Location : Along Jalan Kampung Kolam, at the start of Carnavon Street

An easier way to get to this is to go through the archway of Metal and Air above. Go all the way straight and you will see this artwork on your left, facing the road. This would be the second best Secret Garden that we discovered because the mosaic pond that contains the 8 art glass koi fish is simply breath taking! They look so real as if they are about to jump out! ;)

4. Theater of Ships by Joko Dwi Avianto
Location: Esplanade, between the City and Town Halls

At first, we would thought that the building was going under some construction. Imagine our surprise when we found out that it's also part of the Secret Gardens Project! One cannot help but to stop and admire in awe the structure which was shaped as boats using interwoven bamboos. It's something different, something unique, something worth seeing!

5. Fireflies at River Lallang by Vin
Location : Garden of City Hall, beside Dewan Sri Pinang

The concept was really interesting in that he created an imaginary river of ornamental grass consisting of lallang, cat whiskers, angel flowers, reeds and other willowy plants under a bridge. At night, the fibre optic lights would light up as if they are fireflies. However, sad to say, we felt that the place wasn't lighted enough and it didn't look as beautiful as what we had envisioned it to be. It's also hard to take photos as it was not lighted up enough at night as can be seen in the above picture!

6. Love Garden by Pe Yang Teng & Cassandra Chilton
Location : Along Love Lane

We had a bit of trouble locating this urban setting garden as it's located in one of the small lanes along Love Lane. The lane is situated near to the Chulia Street junction. Just spot the blue lines design on the lane and it will lead you straight to the garden!

Alternatively, you can also access the garden through the open air car park of Reggae Mansion. Just walk in and the garden is located on the right hand side! The chairs will be blocked by the partition if you enter from there, so keep a lookout!

7. The Last Tree by Low Chee Peng
Location : Corner of Armenien Street & Beach Street

Somehow, we either missed this or walked passed it without knowing it's part of the Secret Garden series haha  If we are not mistaken, this is located directly opposite the "Children On A Bicycle" mural. The photo above is taken from the George Town Festival website. It depicts a tree with branches and is made from oxidized steel and cultured marble.

8. Oro Tonu by James Rickard
Location : MPPP Town Hall

This is located nearby the "Fireflies at River Lallang", just cross over the bridge and you will be able to spot it. We were there during night so we also missed this one out...So near yet so far! haha This piece of Angsana wood was retrieved by the City Council workers in late May. To give 'life' to it, James carved it into a shape of an anchor and hence, the name "Oro Tonu" which means "to give life to something that is nearing the end of its life". The photo above is also taken from the George Town Festival website.

Here's the map we've created especially for you! For a better view, click on the link here:

MAS Holidays Discounts and Promo 2013

Hey guys!

We recently learn from a friend of ours that MASholidays is having a super promo! Surprisingly, this promo was not heavily advertised so a lot of people may still be unaware of the fantastic bargains that MAS has to offer. Now, don't say that the Lady Travel Bugs did not share with you this piece of good news the moment we found out!

Believe it or not, our lucky friends managed to book their holiday to Osaka, Japan for only RM1,800 per person for 8 days, 7 nights! And yes, the RM1,800 is INCLUSIVE of everything including the air fare, accommodation, insurance, and taxes! This is a SUPER GOOD DEAL!

All these may sound too good to be true so we personally checked MASholidays. True enough, we found a deal to Osaka, Japan for 7 days, 6 nights for RM2,151 all inclusive which is still cheaper than the usual non-promo air flight tickets to Osaka! To add to that, the dates we found are during the popular sakura season as well!

We even provide you with the screen shots as you seriously have to see it to believe it!

We also found a deal for a 6 days 5 nights trip to Paris, inclusive of accommodation for only RM2,998 per person!

This deal would be suitable for all shopaholics who want to just go breathe the air and and shop till they drop! ;)

Quickly go hunt for your dream holiday packages before they are all snapped up and do share with us if you manage to grab the offer!

Cheerios!

Review: The Nanta Show @ Hongdae Theater

Nanta is the longest running show in Korean history, first debuting in October 1997 and it's still going on strong till 2013.

Cookin' Nanta since 1997

That statement alone is good enough to convince us to fork out a bit and go for the non-verbal comedy show which incorporated that traditional "samu nori" rhythm, a traditional Korean percussion music. There are a few Nanta theaters scattered all over Korea, there's even one in Jeju so you'll be spoilt for choices.

However, us being the Lady Travel Bugs, we are always on the hunt for good bargains. Months before our departure date, we kept checking back on Nanta's Official Site as they update their site with various offers quite frequently! Do check their site out and book your tickets online to get the best deals! :)

Ms Mushroom posing with the Nanta's chefs

The story line is pretty simple with 4 cooks rushing against time to prepare for a wedding banquet within 1 hour. It may be non verbal but trust us, you'll be laughing from the start till the end of the show. They creatively used cooking utensils to make music and turn simple words like "Onion", "Cabbage" "Potato" and "Tomato" into a song! What we found most impressive was the nephew catching the flying plates at top speed...How in the world did he do that?

It's a good experience overall and do include this in your itinerary if you have the time and needed a good laugh. If you want to be more involved in the show, make sure you get seats nearer to the stage as not only will you be splashed with flying cabbages but you might be picked to go on stage! Who knows, you may meet "The One" there since there's a fake marriage ceremony on stage :p

Photo of the stage we secretly took *cheese*

We got lucky that the Hongdae Nanta Theater was having a 30% discount in conjunction with their anniversary special so we ended up paying only 35,000 won each for our tickets. The original priced tickets are about 40,000 won to 70,000 won which can be pretty pricey. We can't say for sure that the show is worth the price that you are paying for!

*swoons...* many cute actors and actresses

For those who are on a tight budget, perhaps you can give this show a miss. If it makes you feel any better, we have no intention to re-watch this show again in the future. Once is more than enough just for the experience! ;)

Sadly, we just found out from Nanta's Official Site that the Hongdae Theater is now temporarily closed and will only reopen on 9th September, 2013 with a new production called "Music Show Wedding". Would this be the next best thing after Nanta? ;)

Don't panic though, The Nanta Show is still available at the Myeondong, Cheongjeongno and Jeju theaters. Click on the links to check out their location! :)

Our happy faces after the show!

Till then, Happy Nanta-ing!

Penang Ernest Zacharevic's Murals Location And Map

Ernest Zacharevic.

The creator. The pioneer. The sifu.

Thanks to this talented Lithuanian who started the mural madness in Penang in conjunction with last year's Georgetown Festival 2012, we have more and more murals gracing all over Georgetown, Penang. Most of the photos here were taken last year and it's sad to see that some of the "Mirrors of Georgetown" murals have already disappeared :(

View Ernest Zacharevic Murals in a larger map

Do hunt for them now if you have yet to do so...Trust us, you won't regret!

1. Reaching Up
Location : Cannon Street

2. This Old Man
Location : Armenien Stree

This is the very first mural painted in the streets of Georgetown, Penang and it depicts Ernest's neighbour, Mr Ng Chai Thiam, the famous wooden blog painter in Penang. The mural is fading away fast so do go catch a glimpse of it before it's too late!

3. Children On A Bicycle
Location : Armenien Street

This mural is not only popular among the tourists and locals but also a hit with the vandals. There have been at least two occasions of vandalism, with the recent one being thrown with dhal curry. It's sad that we have senseless people like these running around and tainting our beautiful Penang!

4. Boy On A Motorbike
Location : Ah Quee Street

5. Boy With Pet Dinosaur
Location: Ah Quee Stree

This mural is also fading fast with the boy's face and the dinosaur barely recognizable. Go quickly and catch them before they too, disappear!

6. Children On A Boat
Location : Chew Jetty

This mural has peeled off sadly, leaving only an outline of where the mural used to be and the above photo as memory. Due to weather condition and the fact that the mural was facing the sea, it faded even faster compared to the others :( As it can be seen from the photo above, the cats have already started to fade since then.

7. Little Girl In Blue
Location: Muntri Street

8. The Trishaw Peddler
Location : Penang Road (facing Red Garden Food Court's Carpark)

9. Despicable Me Minions
Location : Soo Hong Lane, off Armenien Street

 photo 069F4B5D-23F7-48B2-B327-248052D714B6-112-00000001CBAD5EE6_zpsb67bec27.jpg

This is the latest 2013 artwork done by Ernest Zacharevic, painted on a concrete traffic bollard to "celebrate" the minion craze. We were surprised how much this craze affected the Penangnites although we still could not understand it till today. Google or YouTube McD Minions in Penang to see it for yourselves! ;)

Honestly, we were a little bit surprised that this was done by Ernest, the very same artist who did all the above murals. We couldn't help but to wonder if he did this hurriedly in the middle of the night with no lights? Don't get us wrong, we have nothing against him or the Minions! We just have a very high expectation of him and this just falls short compared to all his other artworks!

Finally we had the opportunity to see the artwork, but if you haven't, go to Ernest Zacharevic's Official FB Page for more photos!

10. Broken Hearts
Location : Junction of Love Lane, facing Chulia Street

We have no idea what happened but this is no longer where it is supposed to be. Does anyone here know what happened to this beautiful piece of artwork? Please let us know! For now, the above photo is the only proof we have of its existence!

And finally, our very own printable map :)
